PlatinumGames gives statement on Scalebound’s cancellation

PlatinumGames has given a statement on the cancellation of its ambitious Xbox One and PC project, Scalebound, and while it apologizes for the project’s termination it doesn’t give a reason why.

Kenichi Sato, the chief executive of the studio, said Platinum was “very disappointed things ended up this way, especially since we know many of our fans were looking forward to this game as much as we were.”

Scalebound, announced at Microsoft’s E3 2014 keynote, was to have been a co-operative action game featuring adventurers and a dragon companion. Microsoft pulled the plug on it on Monday, again giving no reason for doing so. Eurogamer, confirming news first reported by Kotaku, reported that Platinum stopped working on the game before the end of 2016.

The game had already been delayed once. Originally slated for a holiday 2016 launch, Microsoft delayed it into 2017 about a year ago.

Sato’s statement mentioned three other projects PlatinumGames has in the works: Nier: Automata, which launches in March, and Granblue Fantasy Project Re:Link and Lost Order, which have no launch window yet. “We will keep working hard to meet your expectations,” Sato said.

Hideki Kamiya, the game’s director, also commented about the game’s cancellation on Twitter, saying he was “very sorry to everyone who was looking forward to this game.”
